Reverse Engineering

The Intent

Translation continues by reversing direction. Reverse Engineering exists to create a clear, step-by-step Path to a goal by working backwards from the finish line, breaking the goal down into a sequence of causes to arrive at the desired effect.

The Practice

Choose a specific long- or mid-term goal from the Goal Horizon Map. Define the end result clearly, and then list the final step required before completion. Ask "What must I do or achieve to get to this specific point?", and write down the answer. Continue listing each prior step in reverse chronological order, slowly building a chain of steps that lead to your chosen goal. Repeat until you've reached an action you can take this week, if not today. List the sequence clearly, ordered by cause and effect, from today until you have reached your original goal.

The Insight

Working backwards creates a clear starting point linked with your goal, and translates your destination into a Path for you to walk instead of drifting aimlessly. For larger goals, this demystifies them, making them more actionable, and thus reducing the paralysis that comes from a lack of direction.
